Job Description

AHRC New York City is seeking a full-time Employment Skills Instructor to support young adults with disabilities as they build workplace readiness and develop vocational skills through hands-on internship rotations.

Job Description

Under the direction of the Program Director and Workforce Development Coordinator, the Employment Skill Instructor (Direct Support Professional (DSP) Instructor) is responsible for preparing young adults (ages 18-24) for careers in the human services field by delivering engaging, competency-based instruction aligned with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) Core Competencies.

The instructor facilitates classroom instruction, work readiness training, professional writing development, and employment preparation while fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment. This position plays a critical role in equipping participants with the technical knowledge, interpersonal skills, and professional behaviors necessary to obtain employment as Direct Support Professionals and succeed in long-term careers supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The successful candidate is a dynamic educator who can connect with diverse learners, adapt instruction to varying learning styles, and motivate young adults toward achieving industry-recognized credentials and meaningful employment

Location: Manhattan, NY & Staten Island, NY

Compensation Package: $50,000 per year plus a very generous and comprehensive benefits package. See Benefit information below.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver engaging classroom instruction that prepares participants to earn the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) credential.
  • Teach NADSP Core Competencies, person-centered supports, professionalism, ethics, disability awareness, communication, health and safety, documentation, community inclusion, and employment readiness.
  • Implement work readiness and soft skills curricula that prepare participants for successful entry into the workforce.
  • Prepare participants for internships, job shadowing opportunities, and competitive employment.
  • Integrate technology into instruction using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and online instructional platforms.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of participants with varying educational backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Promote participant engagement through interactive and experiential learning activities.
  • Collaborate with program staff to address attendance, engagement, and participant success.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and progress records for all participants.
  • Facilitate case conferences with families, counselors, and service providers to track participants’ progress.
  • Assist in securing new job opportunities and career advancement for participants.
  • Assess and intake new participants, ensuring program eligibility.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in field of Education, Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling or related human services, plus 2 years teaching experience or permanent certification from NYS Department of Education/NYC Board of Education or combination of 8 years related education and experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of methods, principles and techniques of teaching developmentally disabled and non-disabled adults needed. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professional staff and participants’ families. 
  • Ability to conduct evaluations and make recommendations.
  • Ability to successfully complete DOE/PIC training in use of its mandatory curriculum.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license preferred.
