Seeking a motivated engineer to assist in the design and development of advanced image scanning and laser marking technology. Contributing to a cross-discipline team on all aspects of system design and integration, this position offers the ability to work closely with mechanical, optical and software disciplines.

The primary responsibilities will be in the design and specification of analog and digital electronic circuits, including circuit layout, prototyping, debugging and verification. This position involves research, innovation and being committed to customer satisfaction. Broadly qualified candidates will embrace contribution to hardware, firmware and simulation needs as well as extensive hands-on experience with products and lab equipment.

The location of the position is in Londonderry, NH; up to 10% travel may be required to customer locations and other Thorlabs sites.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop electronics for precision scientific instruments and peripherals
  • Develop firmware to control and monitor a number of optical, mechanical and electrical components within one integrated system
  • Take a design from an initial concept through prototyping, debugging and manufacturing phases
  • Manage project timeline and costs
  • Manage electronic component vendors and contract manufacturers
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electronics related system issues
  • Manage electronics engineering documentation and material specifications
  • Develop circuits and systems to meet R&D and manufacturing needs

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. Ability to reconfigure electronics lab test equipment as needed.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 4+ years’ experience with electronics design for scientific, industrial, biotech, medical, or semiconductor instrumentation
  • Substantial experience in analog/digital low noise design, power, simulation and implementation
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout of multilayer boards
  • Design work with FPGA such as Xilinx, Altera, Sharc or Zynq processors
  • Experience with Altium Designer
  • Interest in LASER projection, imaging, beam steering, LIDAR, encoders
  • Use of oscilloscope, DVM, logic analyzer, soldering
  • Ability to test and diagnose circuits and components

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or experience in a related field such as Mechatronics and Scientific Instrumentation

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of embedded hardware, control and monitoring systems
  • Knowledge of Verilog, VHDL, C/C++, Python
  • Proven expertise in troubleshooting and resolving electronic circuit issues
  • Familiarity with design and implementation of optoelectronic circuits, motors and control systems
  • Experience with test and debugging of DSP and FPGA
  • Strong communication skills and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience in working in a team environment
  • Strong innovation skills
  • Ability to function autonomously with little direction/works well independently of others

Pay range for this position is $100,000- $115,000 depending on experience
