Job Title: Education Outreach Officer, Temporary ending March 31, 2027, with possibility of extension

 

Location of Position: Gander, NL



Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week



Rate of Pay: $45,000.00/yr



Job Description: The Education Outreach Officer is responsible for assisting in the development, coordination and delivery of Indigenous education and child/youth initiatives within the NL Schools and Wards of Qalipu First Nation. The Officer will be responsible for assisting in the delivery of the Education Outreach Program, the Outdoor Education Program and other child and youth special projects and initiatives. The Officer will coordinate community engagement sessions, schedule meetings, deliver cultural content and assist in the administration of programs and events. In collaboration with the manager, the Officer will assist in pursuing new project funding opportunities.

  

Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting in the coordination and delivery of the Education Outreach Program, including school visits and school event coordination
  2. Assisting in the delivery of the Outdoor Education Program, including interpretation, instruction and supervision duties
  3. Assisting in the development, coordination and delivery of education and child/youth special projects as identified by the manager
  4. Coordinating community engagement sessions
  5. Writing and reporting
  6. Providing support to related QFN projects that further the culture and heritage of the Mi'kmaq people
  7. Assisting in the promotion of programs and events
  8. Performing other related duties as required

  

Qualifications:



Education: Completion of a minimum 2-year diploma level program within a field of study related to social sciences, education, or community development or a related field from an accredited university or college. Consideration will be given to those applicants who possess equivalent training and experience.

 

Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of experience in delivering child/youth programs.

Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating programs and events.  Experience in community engagement and working with the Indigenous population. Interpersonal communication and organizational skills. Knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture and heritage would be considered an asset.



Working Conditions: This position is primarily based in community and schools throughout Ktaqmkuk with the remainder of work taking place in office during regular business hours. While most duties are carried out during regular business hours, this role requires travel and a flexible work schedule. The incumbent will need to participate in land camps, day camps, and outdoor education activities with the school system, which may include overnight stays and will take place at various times throughout the year.

 

A portion of the work will take place in outdoor environments with variable weather conditions, based on the programming, events and initiatives undertaken. Physical activity is required, including walking up to 5 kilometers per day, hiking, bending, crouching and lifting to a maximum of 30 pounds.


Employee Benefits:


Annual Leave: 6% paid out bi-weekly.


Statutory and Non-Statutory Holidays:  Employees are entitled to 13 days off to cover Statutory and Non-statutory holidays per year.


Office Hours: Office hours are from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm


Christmas Break: The office closes down during the Christmas break; this is an added bonus that employees are entitled to. 


 Under 2 hours Medical Appointment: Employees may attend an appointment of less than 2 hours with no deductions to Sick and Family Medical.


Discretionary Bereavement: One day off per year for the death of a relative not included as immediate family, a close friend or neighbour.


Volunteer Program: Employees may volunteer outside of the organization up to 21 hours per year.
