About this role

Overview

The Preschool Floater provides flexible classroom support across multiple age groups to ensure safe supervision, ratio compliance, and continuity of program operations. This position assists teaching staff with daily routines, transitions, and activities and may be assigned to different classrooms based on program needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom coverage to maintain required staff-to-child ratios across all program areas.
  • Maintain active supervision of children at all times, including positioning, scanning, and awareness during transitions and activities.
  • Assist with daily classroom routines including arrival, meals, toileting/diapering, transitions, rest time, and outdoor play.
  • Support implementation of lesson plans and classroom activities under the direction of the Lead Teacher.
  • Transition between classrooms as assigned to support staffing needs, breaks, and coverage.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment in all assigned areas.
  • Communicate with classroom staff and leadership to ensure smooth transitions and coverage.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, NC DCDEE licensing requirements, and supervision expectations.
  • Complete and maintain all required certifications, trainings, and professional development within established timeframes in accordance with YMCA, NC DCDEE, and regulatory requirements.
  • Report any safety, behavior, or supervision concerns immediately to program leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain within required timeframe).

2. Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of classroom routines, transitions, and group care environments.
  • Familiarity with sanitation, health, and safety practices in a childcare setting.

3. Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with children and staff.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and adapt to different classroom environments.
  • Ability to follow direction and support classroom expectations.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to adjust to changing schedules and assignments.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in a fast-paced environment.

4. Abilities:

  • Ability to actively supervise children and maintain required staff-to-child ratios when assigned.
  • Ability to transition between classrooms and age groups as needed throughout the day.
  • Ability to support classroom routines, including transitions, meals, rest time, and outdoor play.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment in all assigned areas.
  • Ability to follow YMCA policies, NC DCDEE licensing requirements, and supervision expectations.
  • Ability to communicate concerns related to safety, behavior, or supervision to program leadership.

Physical Requirements:

The Preschool Floater must represent the YMCA in a professional manner. The employee must be able to maneuver the grounds and facilities freely and be capable of speaking clearly, including, but not limited to: walking, stooping, carrying a minimum of 50 lbs., sitting, standing, pushing, climbing, kneeling, lifting a minimum of 50 lbs., and crouching.
