About this role

At Bristol Myers Squibb, our employees often ask, “Who are you working for?”—a question that fuels collaboration, accountability, and urgency in our work. Our purpose-driven culture inspires us to discover, develop, and deliver innovative medicines to prevail over serious diseases. We offer uniquely interesting and meaningful work, opportunities for growth, and a supportive environment that values inclusion, wellbeing, flexibility, and comprehensive benefits. This is work that transforms the lives of patients, and the careers of those who do it.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and passionate team that is focused on being a world class Product Stewardship group within Bristol Myers Squibb’s Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability Enablement organization. As a member of the Product Stewardship group, the successful applicant will be primarily responsible for the technical execution of Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) /Life Cycle Assessment (LCAs), as well as development of the PCF/LCA multi-year strategy advising where the company invests, development of digital PCF/LCA tools, how PCF LCA is embedded into product development and procurement decisions, and how we engage suppliers and external standards bodies.  The successful candidate will be the internal authority on product environmental footprinting and the person who turns it from a set of one-off studies into a scalable, decision-grade capability.  In addition to working on PCFs/LCAs, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to help operationalize other Product Stewardship regulations across the business. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to participate in other aspects of the Product Stewardship program (e.g., global research projects, environmental support of sites, extended producer responsibility, chemical registrations,  hazard communication) as time permits. This role will also act as a primary back up for the Product Stewardship Lead.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as BMS's subject-matter expert and strategic lead for LCAs and PCFs
  • Build, run, and critically review cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave LCAs/PCFs for BMS Products that are audit-ready and third-party-verifiable.
  • Build the internal operating model: governance, standard methodologies, digital tools, data-management systems, and the tools and training that let non-specialists across the company use PCF/LCA outputs
  • Own PCF/LCA technology implementation and lifecycle — including guiding the maturing Watershed platform on tool design, data quality, and fit to evolving business and regulatory needs
  • Translate external product-stewardship regulations/mandates into executable internal programs and repeatable workflows
  • Represent BMS in industry workstreams/projects
  • Work with the Environment and Sustainability Enablement (ESE) group to embed life cycle thinking into design, formulation, packaging, device, and sourcing decisions early enough to change outcomes — and build a roadmap for how LCA/PCF informs development.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, industrial ecology, chemistry, or a related field, or a bachelor's degree with equivalent demonstrated LCA/PCF experience
  • 10+ years of relevant industrial experience, including demonstrated, hands-on delivery of cradle-to-grave life cycle assessments and product carbon footprints; pharmaceutical, biotech or life sciences industry experience is a plus; Engagement with pharma-sector harmonization efforts is a plus.
  • Working fluency in the governing standards: ISO 14040/14044 (LCA), ISO 14067 (product carbon footprint), and the GHG Protocol Product Standard, with familiarity with the pharma-specific PAS 2090:2025 product category rules and the French "medicine carbon score" methodology.
  • Hands-on proficiency with recognized LCA software (e.g., SimaPro, GaBi) and life cycle inventory databases (e.g., ecoinvent). Familiarity with Watershed is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce robust, low-uncertainty, third-party-verifiable PCFs/LCAs — including managing data quality, boundary setting, and uncertainty analysis to a standard that survives independent verification and audit.
  • Experience operationalizing product-stewardship or environmental regulations in a regulated industry — translating an external requirement into an executable internal program
  • Ability to translate technical results into clear business, regulatory, and commercial decisions for non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership
  • Ability to innovate and encourage others to do so as well. Strives to enhance performance by doing things that are unique and leading edge; experience with AI and/or automation is a plus
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration across procurement, manufacturing, regulatory, commercial, and sustainability/disclosure functions
  • Willingly embraces changes needed to adapt to new circumstances and uncertainties
