Deputy Voter Protection Director

Role Overview

The Deputy Voter Protection Director will work closely with the Voter Protection Director to organize the statewide volunteer poll watching effort, build strategic partnerships and coalitions to protect the vote during early voting, Election Day, and other components of the voting process. We are seeking an experienced volunteer organizer who is passionate about defending democracy and eager to work with staff and volunteers to create meaningful change for Texas voters. The Deputy will work closely with the Voter Protection leadership team to develop, build, and maintain strong relationships with state and local partners leading to the best outcome for protecting the vote.

Core Responsibilities

• In coordination with Voter Protection leadership, the Deputy will build and maintain strategic partnerships to protect the right to vote
• Design engagement and volunteer pipelines and processes for voter protection engagement with partners and key stakeholders
• Develop and manage the poll watching components of the voter protection program,  including recruitment, training, assignments, credentialling, and communication with poll watchers
• Manage Regionals/Associates, setting goals and supporting them in achieving them
• Manage the program’s data in Votebuilder/VAN’s MyCampaign, Google Sheets and other systems, ensuring data is accurate and clean 
• Set up the structures and technology for the poll watcher program, including Mobilize, VAN Virtual Phone Banks, a texting tool, and a proprietary poll watcher management database 
• Design materials and facilitate trainings for poll watchers to provide what they need to effectively identify, address, and report issues
• Maintain strong volunteer communication and responsiveness

Qualifications

• At least two cycles of experience in an organizing role focused on volunteer recruitment and management
• Proficiency with VAN’s MyCampaign, including experience creating lists and virtual phone banks, and a general comfort with data and technology 
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong candidates will have experience presenting to or training medium-sized groups and comfort with writing email newsletters or recruitment emails
• Strong lens and judgment on issues of race and equity, a sophisticated understanding of racial equity and structural racism as it relates to our work, and an awareness of voter suppression’s disproportionate impact on marginalized communities.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours (nights and weekends) as Election Day approaches, and during Early Vote and Election Day operations. 
• Experience with coalition building

Compensation: $8,500 per month
