CLASS DEFINITION

A Crime Laboratory Technician II investigates the scene of crimes and collects physical evidence for laboratory examination and court presentation. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work rotating shifts and are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Work is performed at crime locations where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, dangerous City districts and violent or hostile individuals are encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion necessary to lift and move large and heavy materials and objects from crime sites.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

REQUIREMENTS: Have bachelor's degree in criminalistics, chemistry, biology, physics or a related science from an accredited college or university.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have and two years of experience in the detection, collection and preservation of criminal evidence for court use.

OR

NOTES EQUIVALENCIES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

AND

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

NOTE: Those Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All people, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory one-year probation. 

Eligibility 

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.                     

                                        

Education Accreditation 

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
