About this role

Overview

The Clinical Director I provides regional clinical leadership and support to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care across Air Methods' Midwest Region, including Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan. Working closely with clinical, operational, and medical leadership, this role drives quality improvement initiatives, supports regulatory and accreditation compliance, develops clinical team members, and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and clinical excellence. Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Partner with the Clinical Director II, regional leadership, safety, risk, compliance, and education teams to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
  • Support compliance with Air Methods standards, CAMTS accreditation requirements, and all applicable local, state, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in identifying operational and clinical improvement opportunities and help implement best practices across assigned bases.
  • Ensure efficient progression of clinical team members through onboarding and rider qualification processes.

Quality Improvement & Clinical Oversight

  • Monitor clinical performance trends through chart reviews, documentation audits, and reported events.
  • Identify potential clinical risks, recurring issues, or opportunities for improvement and collaborate on corrective actions.
  • Support Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives, including clinical data analysis, dashboard review, and performance monitoring.
  • Participate in clinical investigations, remediation efforts, and follow-up action plans as directed.
  • Escalate significant clinical concerns to the Clinical Director II and appropriate stakeholders.

Medical Director & Regulatory Partnership

  • Facilitate Medical Director engagement in clinical review processes as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison for communicating clinical concerns, performance trends, and quality initiatives.
  • Assist in preparing assigned bases for CAMTS accreditation and re-accreditation activities.
  • Support ongoing compliance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.

Clinical Team Development & Support

  • Provide guidance, coaching, and mentorship to Clinical Base Leads to support operational and clinical success.
  • Contribute to clinical hiring activities, including candidate screening, scenario-based assessments, and interview participation.
  • Provide performance-related feedback and recommendations to Area Managers for annual evaluations and development planning.
  • Collaborate with education and leadership teams to support teammate growth and clinical competency.

Resource & Compliance Management

  • Oversee medical supply utilization and expenditures for assigned bases to support cost-effective operations.
  • Assist in ensuring all clinical licenses, certifications, and credentials remain current and properly documented.
  • Support billing, operational, and regulatory compliance requirements through accurate credential management.

Additional Requirements

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Travel as required to support assigned bases, training activities, audits, and operational needs.
  • Comply with all Air Methods policies, procedures, and employment practices.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility; however, it provides leadership, mentorship, and guidance to Clinical Base Leads and clinical team members across assigned locations.

Qualifications

Qualifications

To perform this role successfully, candidates must be able to carry out the essential responsibilities of the position. The qualifications below represent the knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities required. Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Healthcare, Management, Nursing, EMS, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing or Paramedic program.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in critical care, emergency nursing, or EMS.
  • Previous flight nurse or flight paramedic experience required; critical care ground transport experience may be considered.
  • Prior leadership or management experience within an air medical or transport program preferred.
  • Current specialty certification required:
    • Nurses: CFRN, CCRN, CEN, or CTRN
    • Paramedics: FP-C or CC-P
  • CFRN or FP-C certification preferred.

  • Strong understanding of clinical operations and the ability to balance operational priorities with financial stewardship.
  • Proven ability to advocate for patients, teammates, and high standards of clinical care.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Sound decision-making and critical thinking skills, with the ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Current RN or Paramedic license in the applicable state(s) of practice.
  • Current certifications in:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • Approved Air Medical Trauma Credential
  • Current specialty certification as applicable to discipline:
    • Nurses: CFRN, CCRN, CEN, or CTRN
    • Paramedics: FP-C or CC-P

 

Minimum pay

USD $89,000.00/Yr.

Maximum Pay

USD $137,925.00/Yr.
