About this role

A DAY IN THE LIFE

As a Senior Mechanical CAD Designer – Gas Power Generation, you'll serve as a technical leader supporting the design and development of utility-scale gas power generation projects. You'll play a key role in helping build Blattner's gas power generation engineering capabilities by developing mechanical designs for gas turbines, reciprocating engines, and balance of plant (BOP) systems while partnering with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver reliable, constructible solutions.

A typical day may involve collaborating with mechanical, electrical, controls, civil, and structural engineers to develop and review complex engineering drawings, equipment layouts, piping systems, mechanical arrangements, and construction documentation supporting gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine plants, Simple – cycle and combined-cycle power plants, substations, switchyards, transmission infrastructure, and other critical power generation systems.

Beyond creating high-quality engineering drawings, you'll mentor CAD Designers, champion drafting standards and process improvements, evaluate new technologies, and help establish best practices that improve engineering quality and efficiency. Working closely with Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, and Construction teams, you'll transform complex engineering concepts into accurate, constructible designs that support successful project execution from proposal through commissioning.

STEP INTO THE ROLE

  • Lead the development, review, and coordination of complex mechanical CAD drawings and design packages for utility-scale gas power generation projects.
  • Support mechanical, electrical, controls, civil, and structural engineering teams by producing detailed construction documents and engineering deliverables.
  • Develop equipment layouts, mechanical arrangements, piping systems, balance of plant (BOP) layouts, site plans, and construction details for gas power generation facilities.
  • Develop mechanical CAD solutions for gas turbine, reciprocating engine, and balance of plant systems while helping establish design standards and best practices across Blattner's growing gas power generation portfolio.
  • Lead estimating and engineering drafting efforts by resolving complex design challenges, supporting quantity takeoffs, modeling, constructability reviews, and engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate and manage incoming engineering, survey, and design data to support engineering and construction activities.
  • Review engineering drawings and documentation for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with company standards.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to CAD Designer I and II team members through coaching, work product reviews, and training.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement CAD process improvements, drafting standards, and new technologies that improve engineering quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Estimating, Integrated Supply Chain, Construction, Owners, and Engineers of Record to ensure designs support successful project execution from planning through construction.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve drafting standards, and increase team efficiency through continuous improvement initiatives.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Minimum two-year technical degree in Drafting and Design – Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or related technical discipline.
  • Five or more years of progressive CAD design experience supporting industrial, utility, power generation, EPC, or heavy construction projects.
  • Advanced proficiency using AutoCAD and other engineering design software.
  • Experience in creating detailed construction documentation for multidisciplinary engineering projects.

WHAT SETS YOU APART

  • Experience supporting gas turbine facilities, reciprocating engine generation plants, simple – cycle and combined-cycle power plants, or balance of plant (BOP) systems.
  • Ability to work independently while developing mechanical layouts, equipment arrangements, piping systems, and construction documentation for gas power generation facilities.
  • Experience supporting gas turbine OEMs, reciprocating engine manufacturers, or EPC firms, including equipment integration, auxiliary systems, and mechanical interfaces.
  • Strong background in mechanical equipment layouts, industrial piping systems, utility infrastructure, or power generation projects.
  • Experience mentoring CAD Designers while developing drafting standards, workflows, and best practices.
  • Passion for continuous improvement, innovation, and leveraging technology to improve engineering quality and efficiency.
