Building Maintenance Worker
About this role
Our
client, NOW Canada Society, is a Kelowna-based organization dedicated to
supporting women and families who are navigating complex challenges, including
homelessness, poverty, addiction, mental health and trauma. Through a range of
housing, support, wellness and community programs, NOW Canada provides
practical support and opportunities that help individuals move toward greater
stability and independence.
We’re
looking for someone who can jump in and help NOW Canada Society keep things
running smoothly over the coming months. This is an approximately six-month
temporary contract with an immediate start, with the potential to extend
depending on the organization’s circumstances. It’s an ideal opportunity for
someone who is available now, enjoys hands-on work and can step into an
established environment and get to work quickly.
The
Role:
NOW
Canada is looking for a dependable and resourceful Building Maintenance Worker
to provide short-term support across its residential and program facilities.
You’ll handle general building maintenance, repairs and upkeep, respond to
maintenance requests, complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall
and painting work, assist with preventative maintenance, inspect facilities for
maintenance and safety concerns, maintain outdoor areas, and coordinate with
contractors when specialized work is required. You’ll need to be comfortable
working independently, solving problems as they come up and jumping in wherever
support is needed to keep things running smoothly.
Because
you’ll be working in residential environments and around individuals who may
have experienced significant trauma or other complex life circumstances, a
trauma-informed approach is essential. You’ll need to interact with residents
with empathy, respect and appropriate boundaries while maintaining a
professional approach to your work.
What
You Bring:
- Previous
experience in building maintenance, property maintenance, facilities or a
related hands-on trade;
- Strong
general repair and maintenance skills;
- Practical
problem-solving skills and good judgment;
- Comfort
working independently and managing changing priorities;
- A
trauma-informed approach and the ability to work respectfully around vulnerable
populations;
- Strong
communication skills and appropriate professional boundaries;
- A
safety-conscious approach;
- Valid
driver’s license and reliable transportation, with the ability to travel
between NOW Canada properties;
- Basic
computer skills for communication and record keeping.
You
don’t need to be an expert in every trade. We’re looking for someone with solid
general maintenance skills, a willingness to get their hands dirty and the good
judgment to know when a job requires a qualified professional.
A
criminal record check will be required as part of the hiring process.
The
Opportunity:
This
is a temporary full-time position offering 40 hours per week at $28–$30 per
hour. The successful candidate will also be responsible for responding to
building emergencies as needed outside of regular working hours. This is a
hands-on role where you’ll make a practical impact by helping maintain safe,
functional and welcoming spaces for NOW Canada’s residents, staff and programs.
If
you’re an experienced maintenance person who enjoys getting things done, can
jump in quickly, and are comfortable being the go-to person for building
maintenance and emergencies, we’d love to hear from you.
