About this role

Board Member Description:

CCJ's Board of Directors is the organization's legal, governing body. Board members work collectively to advance CCJ's mission: improving policy and regulations for the oversight of fossil fuel extraction and use, educating, empowering, and organizing coalfield residents, and protecting public and environmental health, on behalf of communities that have been extracted from for decades. Board members provide fiscal oversight and strategic guidance to ensure CCJ remains a sound, effective organization in service of that work.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend quarterly Board meetings (75% attendance expected annually) and review materials in advance
  • Vote on corporate matters, including officer elections and other governance decisions
  • Serve as the sole member of CCJ's affiliated c4, including electing its board
  • Serve on the Executive Committee or other committees as appointed
  • Uphold fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and obedience, and stay familiar with CCJ's governing documents
  • Disclose conflicts of interest and protect confidential information
  • Respect staff roles: the Board governs collectively and supervises only the Executive Director (including an annual 360 review); the ED supervises all other staff
  • Represent CCJ responsibly in public statements, and volunteer time to further the mission

Compensation:

This is an unpaid volunteer position. No compensation is provided for service as a Board Member.

We're looking for Board Members who bring:

  • Commitment to CCJ's core mission: preventing the harmful effects of fossil fuel extraction and use, and pursuing restorative justice in coalfield communities
  • Commitment to public health and the wellbeing of communities affected by extraction
  • Commitment to our communities: everyone deserves to stay rooted where they live, not be pushed out by the money that sustains chronic and systemic harm
  • Willingness to serve in a fiduciary capacity with care, diligence, and good judgment
  • Lived experience with the impacts of extraction, or relevant professional experience in areas such as nonprofit governance, legal, finance, community organizing, or communications
  • Ability to attend quarterly board meetings (in person or by teleconference) and contribute to committee work

How to Apply:

Open on a rolling basis; applications go to the Board Chair for review and are kept on file for future reference.

Interested applicants should submit a letter addressed to the Board Chair that:

  • Introduces yourself: who you are, your background, and your connection to coalfield communities (whether from Washington and Greene counties, living here now, or drawn to this work through other lived or professional experience)
  • Speaks to CCJ's mission: in your own words, what does justice for communities impacted by fossil fuel extraction mean to you, and why does this work matter?
  • Shows your commitment: describe a time you've stood up for your community, whether through organizing, advocacy, mutual aid, or another form of showing up for people
  • Shares what you'd bring: what skills, relationships, or lived experience would you bring to CCJ's Board, and what draws you to serve in this role specifically
  • Confirms your capacity: your availability to commit to quarterly Board meetings and committee work

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and lived experiences, whether born and raised in Washington and Greene counties or living here now, and regardless of professional background.
