THE ROLE

This Associate Cataloguer role will provide overall support to the Chinese Works of Art Department, including but not limited to sales, customer relations, catalogue production and administration while improving technical expertise in the field of Chinese Works of Art.

The Associate Cataloguer shall gradually develop skills to undertake new business generation and for the sourcing, authentication, evaluation and sale of property over time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting in cataloguing and researching items for sale:
    • Supporting the members of the Chinese Works of Art Department with the research and cataloguing of items to the highest standard according to scheduled deadlines
    • Corresponding with external experts
    • Assisting with physical cataloguing and arranging photography of works
  • Supporting all aspects of catalogue production including:
    • Proof-reading catalogue texts
    • Assisting with layouts and photography
  • Supporting research for each work in our sales and keeping diligent records of provenance, exhibition history and literature references
  • Learning to evaluate works of art by assisting with research prior to estimate sessions
  • Providing a comprehensive level of services to Sotheby’s clients e.g., providing exemplary levels of service, both verbal and written communication, responding swiftly and accurately to enquiries, photo-forms and general correspondence
  • Preparing condition reports
  • Supporting the Chinese Works of Art Department on all ad-hoc assignments
  • Operating always in accordance with the company’s rules on compliance and corporate governance

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • Chinese language (written and spoken)
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of work experience
  • A background in Asian Art History, with experience researching and writing about works of art.
  • Computer literate (excellent knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize multiple highly important processes and responsibilities in a high-pressure environment and meet constant deadlines
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to establish close working relationships with a variety of people across the department and company
  • Ability to work collaboratively on large projects while being confident and comfortable taking initiative and working on one’s own
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to an exemplary level of client service

The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $54,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
