Southwest Division

Shimmick’s Southwest Division, headquartered in Irvine, California, focuses on large public owners in Southern California, across water resources, water treatment, transportation and transit markets. Over the past decade, the division has grown tremendously, securing major projects, including the $350 million North City Pure Water Facility in San Diego at the $200 million Groundwater Replenishment System in Orange County.

 

Responsibilities

This role supports, oversees and coordinates engineering production activities for an operating unit. Makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative. Initiates and maintains contact with senior-level management within the company and is skilled in dispute resolution and negotiation of critical issues. At this level, the individual will have demonstrated understanding of project delivery requirements, creativity, foresight, working with a multi- disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high quality technical excellence. Demonstrates mature judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual operations problems, determining operational objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities. Supervision received is essentially administrative with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

Field Engineering & Project Execution

  • Provide technical support to field crews, ensuring accurate interpretation of drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Oversee layout, surveying, and grade control to maintain project accuracy.
  • Help manage and implement construction methodologies and best practices in collaboration with the superintendent and project team.
  • Reports to and support superintendent in day-to-day tasks.
  • Management of subcontractors scopes to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Coordination and interface with other stakeholders which includes inspectors, subcontractors and suppliers.  
  • Management of assigned Force Account work.

Quality Control & Safety Compliance

  • Conduct field inspections to ensure work meets Shimmick’s quality standards and project specifications.
  • Work with the Quality Control/Project team to document and resolve non-conformances.
  • Assist in safety audits and enforce compliance with OSHA and Shimmick safety policies.
  • Promote a safety-first culture by proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards.

Scheduling & Cost Management

  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining project schedules.
  • Track material quantities, labor hours, and equipment utilization to support cost control efforts.
  • Identify and help resolve potential project delays or budget overruns.

Communication & Coordination

  • Work closely with the Project Team which includes project manager, engineers, superintendent and foremen to facilitate smooth execution.
  • Prepare and track RFIs (Requests for Information), submittals, daily reports, and as-built documentation.
  • Participate in daily and weekly construction meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.
  • Serve as a liaison between the field and office, ensuring seamless communication and issue resolution.

Technology & Documentation

  • Utilize construction management software such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Procore, Microsoft Office Packages, CMiC etc.
  • Maintain organized field records and documentation for closeout and future reference.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 10 years of heavy civil construction experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in heavy civil construction projects, preferably in excess of $50 million. 
  • Water / Wastewater treatment plant construction projects highly preferred.

The salary range for this position is between $150,000- $190,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
