Bal Raksha Bharat (also known as Save the Children) is India's leading independent child rights Organisation. It is a member of Save the Children movement that operates globally with the mission to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and achieve immediate and lasting changes in their lives. We are working towards three breakthroughs in how the world treats children by 2030:

· No child dies from preventable causes before their fifth birthday

· All children learn from a quality basic education and

· Violence against children is no longer tolerated

We run programmes in the remotest corners of India and urban areas in the areas of Health & Nutrition, Education, Child Protection and Livelihood & Economic Wellbeing in order to facilitate quality education, healthcare and protection from harm and abuse and life-saving aid during emergencies to children.

Context: The position to provide technical and on-job support to project schools and to develop 25 Aadi Dravidar Welfare Schools at AriyalurDistrict of Tamilnadu as a model of quality Learning Hub to facilitate a

holistic development of the children

 

An integral part of the Right to Education Act, ICT enabled education and Experiential Learning with STEM approach (Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics) has the potential to transform the system of education and address key issues including; poor learning outcomes, high student teacher ratio, dearth of a capacitated workforce that can impart quality education, dropouts and weak District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) - school linkages. Computer‐aided education could be utilized to facilitate creative teaching and to make the process of learning more informative and interactive. Introducing ICT enabled education and STEM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) also has its potential to attract underprivileged and differently abled children to school, accelerate retention and life-long learning in addition to creating a meaningful learning environment through experiential learning with SMART CLASS ROOMS AND STEM LABORATORIES under the lenses of Inclusion in Education.

 

Also, it is emphasized to focus on foundation learning for primary level children under the lenses of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy under NIPUN Bharat’s guidance as mandated by NEP 2020

Project Brief:

 

The project aims to increase access to quality education at primary schools by maximizing the utilization of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and STEM approach to provide an experiential learning to the students for understanding about the concepts on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics by enhancing teacher capacities and creating child and leaner friendly environment for children. This will help in achieving age and grade appropriate competencies. thereby improving the learning outcomes in Adi Dravidar Welfare Residential Schools at AriyalurDistrict. Overall, this project will help in strengthening the eco system of education by promoting safe school concept and equipping the children with quality learning to overcome the challenge of learning crisis which is experiencing across schools due to traditional teaching methods, lack of infrastructure facilities and strong foundational skills at primary level.


The overall the project intervention will support to improve learning outcomes through encouraging innovative Techno based pedagogy and ensuing community and school relation to enhance the community participation in school management with de-centralised school management under the lenses of inclusion and theory of change with establishing a sustainable and replicable model in project states with child centric teaching and learning approaches.

Goal

To develop 25Adi Dravidar Welfare Schools as a model of quality Learning Hub to facilitate a holistic development of the children

 


SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1.      Establishing learner-friendly infrastructure in schools to promote experiential learning.

2.      Building the capacity of teachers to integrate child-centric pedagogy for ensuring child participation.

3.      Strengthening school and community relations to take an active role in school development.

 

Project Beneficiaries: The project intervention will be benefiting eligible children from the entire district covering more than 60 villages approximately.

 

·      5050 children in the age group of 6 to 10 years, studying in Grades 1-5 from the selected 25Adi Dravidar Welfare schools in the district (Boys – 2625 & Girls – 2425)

·      Project will also benefit 470 parents and SMC members through direct engagement within school and also the community (Male – 150 & Female – 100)


·      100 teachers/ head teachers (Male – 120 & Female – 78)

·      Government officials at the cluster, block, District and State level: 25 (Male – 15 & Female – 10)

 

Through the proposed intervention, Bal Raksha Bharat also known as Save the Children proposes to adopt a strategy wherein the quality of education is improved in a systemic way by engaging with key duty bearers at all levels and offering sustainable solutions utilizing technology resources with:

 

ü Creating FLN (Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Platform at Primary level

ü Establishing happy rooms

ü Strengthening school libraries

ü Introducing BLES (Building a learning environment in schools)

Job Purpose:

To work as Academic Facilitator to support Teachers in project schools with academic inputs to create a child and learner friendly environment in selected government schools. The role is to provide on-job academic support to the Teachers to work on innovative subject specific pedagogies to make class rooms more vibrant with child centric teaching learning process.

 

Besides to this, understanding the key challenges on low learning among primary school and secondary school children to bridge the learning to the children to achieve age and grade appropriate curriculum to achieve desired learning competencies among all children in schools. Creating experiential learning through ICT enabled education, promoting STEM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics concepts) and concepts by providing STEM tools to the students to have an experiential learning process. Facilitating Teacher training and demonstrating DIY (Do It Yourself) kit for experimentation, promoting Building Learning Environment through BLES painting.

 

Besides to this, promoting FLN-Foundational Literacy and Numeracy by creating a FLN platform with required materials at primary classes and promoting reading habit among students through strengthening school libraries. Also act as Bal Raksha Bharat’s (save the Children’s) Academic representative to bridge the learning among children in target schools’ and building a strong school and community relations to promote de-centralized school leadership for ensuring community participate in school development.

 

Key scope Academic Facilitator :

·      Orienting and providing on job support to the teachers on STEM and ICT enabled education

·      Assessment of children progress and facilitating need-based support

Key Scope Admin Assistant :

·      Organize procurement of consumables / stationery supplies as required for the Field office and monitor its use as mandated by Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

·      Negotiate to get best value for good and services.

·      Ensure effective and accountable Procurements support to the field team

·      Adherence to Admin SOP, Maintain stock register of consumables and office equipment

·      Coordinate maintenance of all office equipment and utilities

·      Maintain communication with other SC BR offices through e-mail, fax, courier and post

·      Support in ensuring timely payments to Vendors

·      Organize travel and stay for state staff visiting outside and for visitors

·      Provide support in organizing workshops / seminars initiated in the state

·      AF must maintain regular contact with Teachers, CRCCs, students, Anganwadi Teachers and SMC members to build strong relations among all educational stakeholders

·      AF would generate ideas on different subject specific project works for children to create knowledge among students beyond regular textbooks and curriculum

·      AF to undertake special teaching and learning classes for needy children to bridge the learning gaps with the support of school management and local youth volunteers if required

·      Encourage children to do projects and making on different subjects and themes to demonstrate in exhibitions and science/education fares at block and district level to generate competitive spirt with knowledge sharing.

·      AF would facilitate Child Groups/Cabinets to enhance leadership among students/children to take part in school development and peer support

·      AF would vigilant on child protection challenges within school to support them on resolving with smoother way with the support of school management.

·      AF would facilitate Reading buddies among children for improving reading and learning skills among peers

·      AF must encourage children to read and utilize the school libraries

·      Would encourage children to write and narrate stories with the support of Teachers for creating story banks at school level

·      Facilitate various variety of activities for promoting LSRW (listening, Speaking, Reading & writing) among students

·      Would facilitate School Management Committee meetings and orient them on their roles in school development

·      Would undertake counselling for needy children to come out of psychosocial challenges among students during emergencies and peace time.

·      To educate the children on various Child Protection channels to promote child safety and wellbeing.

Technical:

·      Facilitate the process for children on utilizing SMART Class rooms and STEM laboratories to have an experiential learning on complex topics on science and other technical topics

·      Promote basic skills among children on FLN skills

·      Support Teachers for undertaking CCE (Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation process) and project works to bring out children’s inherent talents

·      Would facilitate Library & reading times to utilize the school library books to get knowledge beyond text book

·      Would Organize extra-curricular activities for students to encourage them with their inherent talents

·      Undertake frequent assessment to understand student/children’s levels to bridge the learning and to provide moral support for better performance

·      S/he would build relationships with Education departments at Cluseter/Block and district level as well with school managements

·      S/he would have regular contacts with SMCs at the school level to make them accountable in school development.

·      AF would document periodic progress, case studies of best practices to show case at district and state level

·      Timely collection and submission of all MIS related information and data for the project progress documentation.

·      Facilitate the Trainings and build capacities for the communities and other stakeholders

·      Facilitate and Involve in all assessment including Baseline and end line studies,

·      Capacity building programs for Teachers and other key stakeholders as per the project requirements

·      Undertake frequent visits to schools and facilitate meetings with all stakeholders and to

·      Abide the local office administrative procedures including the terms of timings, code of conduct, child safe guarding policy as per the Save the Children’s staff charter

·      Preparation and sharing of Monthly and Quarterly field reports to the Field Office with accurate information for support MIS at state level

·      Adhering to all financial norms and procedures of Bal Raksha Bharat (Save the Children)

·      Undertake appropriate additional responsibilities as assigned by the line manager

·      S/he would help and support the Project Manager for any assigned tasks as and whenever necessary.

·      To facilitate WASH activities with the support of Project Engineer to crate WASH awareness among students

Process:

·      To be able to provide on ground support to community and leaders as and when required in the best interests of protecting children and women

·      Ensure timely submission of internal field reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual) to the field office as mandated

·      Ensure compliance with BRB (Save the Children) policies and practices, including the Child Safeguarding Policy.

·      Quality timely compliance on periodic reporting to the state office, donor and local government department.

Others:

·      Coordinate with the Project Manager for implementation of the project

·      Ability to operate and promote cost-effective approaches to maximize resources for children

·      Contribute to a positive working environment.

·      Promote the work of BRB’s (Save the Children) – communicating, both internally and externally, in an accurate, sensitive and motivating fashion

·      Understand and be an advocate, internally and externally, for the values of Save the Children

·      Ensure that all activities comply with applicable law at all times, including compliance with data protection legislation
