Wesleyan University’s College of Social Studies invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning July 1, 2027 from scholars with primary research and teaching interests in history of economic thought, economic history, political economy, and/or economic philosophy. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in economics in hand by the time of appointment in order to be hired as an assistant professor.  However, a successful candidate could be hired initially as an instructor if they are on track to complete the degree within one year of hire, at which point the rank would be converted to assistant professor. Advanced assistant professors of economics are also encouraged to apply. The teaching load is four courses per year. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a sustained and professionally visible program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the college and university levels. The College of Social Studies (CSS) is a rigorous, multidisciplinary major focusing on history, government, and social theory in addition to economics. Founded in 1959, the CSS is reading and writing intensive, encouraging intellectual independence with weekly essays, small group tutorials, and a vibrant intellectual community. Wesleyan values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching evaluations if available, and a sample of scholarly writing via the online application portal. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they support the college's commitment to fostering an inclusive community. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation. Complete applications must be received by November 15, 2026, to be assured of full consideration. Contact Martha Crebbin with questions at mcrebbin@wesleyan.edu.

The salary range for this position is between $93,500 and $98,500.
