Job Description

We are looking to expand our Environmental division in Ontario by hiring a motivated Archaeologist to work along our Senior Project Archaeologist to support our growing Cultural Heritage team. Our areas of specialty include conducting preliminary stages of archaeological assessments in a high-quality and efficient manner, supporting our clients through the provincial archaeological process and facilitating engagement with Indigenous communities.

Egis’ Environmental Service Line has been recognized over the past 30+ years as providing high-level deliverables and advice to a variety of clients, throughout Ontario and the rest of Canada. Our Environmental Service Line currently consists of experts in the following fields: Cultural Heritage, Contaminant and Waste, Hydrogeology, Environmental Assessment, Natural Science and Environmental Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Request Project Information Form (PIF) Numbers, conduct research on previous archaeological work and sites using Ontario’s Past Portal;
  • Complete archaeological fieldwork under the supervision of our Senior Project Archaeologist including Stage 1 property inspections and Stage 2 surveys (pedestrian and test pitting surveys);
  • Collect, manage and present field data accurately;
  • Prepare Archaeological Assessment reports for internal / client / MCM review
  • Complete key tasks required for archaeological reporting including, but not limited to, background research on a property’s geography, history, previous archaeological fieldwork and current land conditions;
  • Ensure Egis Health and Safety procedures are always followed.

 

Location:   This role can be based out of one of our many office locations which include Markham, Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton or Cambridge,  the majority of the current work is within the GTA, Hamilton and Northern Ontario areas.   You must hold a valid Ontario driver's licence and have flexibility to travel and work on short-term ‘away’ projects across Ontario (hotel stays), as required.

Qualifications

  • BA or BSc degree in Archaeology or Anthropology;
  • 3+ years of field experience working in archaeology or related field;
  • Applied Research license in good standing with the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM) to conduct archaeological fieldwork in Ontario;
  • Familiarity with Indigenous and Euro-Canadian artifacts & archaeological resources
  • Working knowledge of the MCM’s 2011 Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists;
  • Well-developed writing skills and experience completing all, or portions of, archaeological assessment reports;
  • Experience using a variety of computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Excel);  
  • Excellent communication skills and an effective team member;
  • Hold a valid Ontario driver's licence;
  • Flexibility to travel and work on short-term ‘away’ projects across Ontario (hotel stays), as required.

Assets:

  • Experience in GIS and digital field collection tools (ArcGIS, Field Maps, etc.);
  • Experience using a GPS / GNSS receiver and software;
  • Experience working with / engaging Indigenous communities;
  • Familiarity using Ontario’s Past Portal (PastPort).
