Overview

KFS, LLC is seeking an experienced Air Permitting Specialist to lead and grow our air quality permitting program supporting military installations nationwide. This is a rare opportunity to step into a role where you will manage the program from the ground up and build a nationwide team around it.

 

Based in Huntsville, Alabama, this position offers a negotiable hybrid work schedule, giving you flexibility while staying connected to a growing, mission-driven team. The right candidate will bring hands-on experience navigating air permitting requirements in a Department of Defense context, with a strong understanding of the regulatory nuances that come with working on active military installations. This role requires the ability to travel to support projects across multiple regions, and candidates must be qualified to provide air permitting support on a nationwide basis.

 

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the air quality permitting program for military installation projects nationwide
  • Serve as the technical lead for air permitting matters, from initial project scoping through permit issuance
  • Prepare and review air permit applications, including Title V operating permits, New Source Review (NSR) applications, and related regulatory submissions
  • Ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act, applicable New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), and National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP)
  • Navigate state and local air quality regulations across multiple jurisdictions as project locations vary
  • Conduct or oversee air emissions inventories and dispersion modeling (e.g., AERMOD)
  • Coordinate air permitting efforts with related NEPA reviews on federal installations
  • Support Department of Defense clients, with an understanding of Air Force, Army, or Navy environmental compliance programs
  • Travel to military installations nationwide as needed to support project execution
  • Build and grow a nationwide air permitting team, including participation in hiring decisions
  • Mentor and supervise junior technical staff as the team expands
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients on air permitting matters
  • Support business development efforts, including identifying new opportunities and contributing to proposals
  • Manage program budget, scheduling, and overall service line performance
  • Maintain quality assurance and quality control standards across all permitting deliverables
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements

Requirements - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • 7-10 years of experience managing air quality permitting and compliance for DoD installations
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree a plus)
  • Active Secret clearance or demonstrated ability to obtain one
  • Prior experience supporting DoD installations, ideally with familiarity with Air Force, Army, or Navy environmental compliance programs
  • Demonstrated experience managing a technical program, including budget, scheduling, and client relationship oversight
  • Track record of building or scaling a team
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred, particularly in environmental or chemical engineering
  • Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) certification a plus
  • OSHA 10 or 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification, often required for site access on military installations
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification a plus, though not required
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass installation-specific background checks for site access
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationwide, including to active military installations
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule based out of Huntsville, Alabama

Location/Work Schedule: Primary location in Huntsville, AL

This position is hybrid, with a standard full-time work schedule.  Periodic travel may be required to support business needs and government engagements.
