About this role

About HappyRobot

HappyRobot is the infrastructure for enterprises to build and orchestrate AI workforces. Our AI workers don't just communicate through voice and email - they make decisions, take action, and run operations autonomously across entire enterprise systems. Born in Y Combinator (S23) and backed by a16z, Base10, Prysm Capital and Eurazeo with over $150M raised, we power critical operations for global enterprises worldwide.

Our platform is battle-tested in the most demanding environments, where AI has real consequences. We started in logistics, built our own voice stack, models, and orchestration layer from the ground up, and are now bringing that infrastructure to every enterprise that runs the real economy. Role Overview

HappyRobot is hiring an Accounting Manager, General Ledger & OPEX — an owner who will stand up our core close, multi-entity consolidation, and operating-expense accounting from scratch, reporting to the Head of Accounting, as we scale globally across different entities.

This is a 0-to-1 job with real autonomy attached. You're not inheriting a close calendar or a team structure, you're designing both, and you're expected to be a genuine thought partner to the Head of Accounting on GL and close policy, not just an executor of decisions made elsewhere. We expect you to actively hunt down repetitive, manual close work and eliminate it using AI finance tools (including our own platform).

What You'll Do

  • Own the general ledger close end-to-end: design the process from the ground up including reconciliations, accruals, balance sheet flux review on a calendar built to tighten every quarter as automation matures.

  • Act as a genuine thought partner to the Head of Accounting on GL and close policy decisions, not just an implementer that can bring judgment and a point of view.

  • Actively reduce or eliminate manual, repetitive close tasks leveraging system automations or AI finance tools with clear judgment about where automation is safe and where it isn't yet.

  • Build multi-entity consolidation and intercompany elimination processes across our US, UK, Spain, and Brazil entities from scratch, including FX translation, CTA calculation, and intercompany elimination, systematized rather than rebuilt by hand each quarter.

  • Own OPEX accounting end-to-end: accrual processes for expenses incurred but not yet billed, prepaid amortization, and budget-to-actual variance analysis in partnership with FP&A.

  • Own the reconciliation process between AP (Ramp) and payroll (Rippling) feeds and the GL, closing the gap the automated feeds don't catch on their own.

  • Build the internal controls and reconciliation documentation standards needed for our first external audit, from a blank page and own the relationship with auditors on GL-side requests.

What You'll Bring

  • 6-8 years of progressive general ledger / OPEX experience, ideally including multi-entity or international consolidation.

  • A finance engineer's mindset: you build scalable systems that reduce manual work and increase accuracy, not just process what's in front of you.

  • Proven, hands-on experience using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) in your actual day-to-day work, and comfort picking up new automation tools quickly.

  • Strong judgment about which accounting activities should be automated and which genuinely require human review.

  • Solid understanding of foreign currency translation (ASC 830), intercompany accounting, and consolidation mechanics.

  • Comfort operating with real autonomy; you'll be trusted to make GL policy calls, not just execute someone else's.

  • A clear communicator who can explain close mechanics to non-finance stakeholders without jargon.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field; CPA a plus, but not required.

  • Comfortable with our operating principles (below) — this is a hands-on, no-task-too-small environment, regardless of title.

Why Join Us

  • Join a world-class team of engineers and builders.

  • Backed by top investors including a16z, Y Combinator, Base10, Prysm Capital, and Eurazeo.

  • Have ownership and autonomy of projects and are encouraged to ship.

  • Comprehensive benefits including healthcare, dental, vision coverage.

  • Competitive salary + equity in a high-growth startup.

Our Operating Principles

Extreme Ownership
We take full responsibility for our work, outcomes, and team success. No excuses, no blame-shifting — if something needs fixing, we own it and make it better. This means stepping up, even when it's not "your job." If a ball is dropped, we pick it up. If a process is broken, we redesign it. We don't wait for someone else to solve it — we lead with accountability and expect the same from those around us.

Craftsmanship
Putting care and intention into every task, striving for excellence, and taking deep ownership of the quality and outcome of your work. Craftsmanship means never settling for "just fine." We sweat the details because details compound. We aim to deliver jaw-dropping outcomes by being curious, meticulous, and proud of what we build — even when nobody's watching.

We are "majos"
Be friendly and have fun with your coworkers. Always be genuine and honest, but kind. "Majo" is our way of saying: be a good human. Be approachable, helpful, and warm. We give feedback with kindness, challenge each other with respect, and celebrate wins together without ego.

Urgency with Focus
Create the highest impact in the shortest amount of time. Move fast, but in the right direction. We prioritize ruthlessly, act decisively, and stay aligned. We're running a high-speed marathon, not a sprint with no strategy.

Talent Density and Meritocracy
Hire only people who can raise the average; exceptional performance is the passing grade. Ability trumps seniority. We reward contribution, not titles or tenure.

First-Principles Thinking
Strip a problem to physics-level facts, ignore industry dogma, rebuild the solution from scratch. We don't copy-paste solutions.
