Position Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences is looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a commitment to liberal arts education to provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students. The largest undergraduate program at Washington University, the College of Arts & Sciences contains approximately 4,700 degree seeking undergraduate students. Student Academic Affairs, housed within the College Office, comprises five central functional areas: four-year advising and the first-year experience; student progress and academic success; academic policies and administration; post-graduate and pre-professional planning; and pre-health advising and programs.  

The academic advisor will contribute to advising and programmatic initiatives with a particular focus on the work of one of these functional areas, assist in the execution of programs and events that enhance the academic mission of the College of Arts & Sciences, and guide students on their academic path from their first year through graduation.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Serve as a four-year academic advisor for approximately 45 undergraduate students in each class (180 advisees).

  • Provide academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
  • Interpret and explain university policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Identify and help resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students.
  • Analyze students’ academic and personal issues or concerns and provide referral or intervention services.
  • Support students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
  • Coordinate mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.
  • Guide students through college and university level administrative processes.
  • Liaise with Arts & Sciences departments and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
  • Work with campus partners to ensure holistic support and tracking of student progress.
  • Maintain appropriate student records and documents student interactions.
  • Participate, as needed, in specialty advising (e.g., pre-health advising, fellowship and scholarship advising, and progress counseling).

Assist in the coordination and execution of assigned program(s).

  • Assist in the coordination, execution, and maintenance of assigned program(s) at the direction of the program manager or functional lead.
  • Serve as a project contact person.
  • Assist in the production of a variety of documents, reports, proposals or literature.
  • Execute daily tasks and track progress of program.
  • Collaborate in the design of program goals, including development and implementation.
  • May provide guidance or direction to student workers.

Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Support the College Office with additional programming and mission critical priorities.

Salary Range

$49,700.00 - $82,100.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
