Job Title:               Transfer Facility Operator / Heavy Equipment Operator 

Division:                Utilities / Public Works 

Location:               Transfer Station / Operations Building 

Salary:                   $30.81/hr

Benefits:                In accordance with Collective Agreement

Hours of Work:     Various shifts in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Position Status:     1 permanent, full-time. This is an existing vacancy.

Reporting to the Transfer Facility in the six (6) summer months, and the Roads Department in the six (6) winter months, the 50/50 Operator will perform a variety of routine and complex semi-skilled tasks at the Transfer Facility and landfill, and in Roads across various areas of town performing snow clearing and snow maintenance. The Roads shift will be on a night-shift rotation and the Transfer Facility will be weekend shifts 


Responsibilities: 

  • Hauling waste with a truck and trailer to the landfill.
  • Operating heavy equipment at the Transfer Site and landfill such as loader, dozer, rock truck, and other specialized equipment.
  • Operate equipment in a safe and responsible manner including the completion of all pre-operational equipment checks.
  • Performs scheduled road and street maintenance operations.
  • Operates Heavy Equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to: back-hoe, street sweeper, dump truck, road grader, rubber tire loader, sidewalk plough etc.,
  • Works in conjunction with other operators when performing tasks involving two (2) or more pieces of equipment.
  • Complete pre-operational equipment checks and minor service tasks


Qualifications:

  • Must have Grade 12 Diploma or equivalency.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ previous work experience directly related to heavy duty equipment operation and maintenance would be an asset
  • Must possess and maintain a clean valid “AZ” Ontario Driver’s License. Must provide a clean driving record at time of application
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods and procedures used in road maintenance or solid waste activities
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications skills with a proven focus on service delivery
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations specifically concerning the requirements for job hazard analysis and the development of and training on safe work procedures
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Ability to drive and operate a variety of heavy equipment under varying conditions
  • Ability to get along well with others including supervisors, coworkers, members of the public and other partners in service
