The fifth oldest university in the state, Texas A&M University, Commerce, was established in 1889 as East Texas Normal College. In addition to the Commerce campus, it operates six other campuses in places like Dallas, Mesquite and Rockwall, and it offers more than 100 areas of study at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. The Honors College awards 50 top students from each class year with free tuition for all four years. Fourty-eight percent of freshmen receive grants from the school averaging nearly $5,000.
